Doubts are Growing About James Gunn’s Plans for the DC Universe
Nearly four years have passed since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over at DC Studios. During this time, the new DC Universe began to take shape with projects like Superman, Lanterns, Supergirl, Clayface, and Booster Gold. However, the initial plan for Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, focusing on numerous side characters before major characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Flash fully emerged, has been the focus of criticism.
James Gunn Receives Criticism for Moving Too Fast for the DC Universe
A significant portion of the criticism concerns the opening up of the new universe to too many characters and projects too early. The prominence of characters like Creature Commandos, Waller, Booster Gold, and Clayface before Batman or Wonder Woman is seen as risky by some viewers. The simultaneous use of characters like Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Guy Gardner in the Superman film also reinforces the view that the universe is becoming too crowded at its very beginning.
The television side is similarly debated. While productions like Lanterns are positioned as part of the DCU’s main storyline, some viewers worry that the series will become a model where viewers must follow the films to understand them. Marvel’s past problems in this regard are cited as an example, and it’s argued that DC’s more independent film and series structures might be more accessible.
The decision to tackle a major brand like Green Lantern first as a television series is also criticized. While Lanterns’ smaller-scale, character-focused approach was a conscious choice, some fans want to see the Green Lantern world directly in a big-budget feature film. Similarly, the prominence of more niche characters instead of heroes that can reach a wider audience raises doubts about the DCU’s initial strategy.
Despite all this, the new DC Universe is still in its infancy, and James Gunn’s long-term plan is not yet fully revealed. Characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Aquaman are expected to take on more central roles in later stages. For now, the debate revolves around whether Gunn’s decision to introduce different and less frequently used characters is a creative advantage or a risk that unnecessarily complicates the new universe.
