GTA 6 Removed the Refrigerator System, Which Was Deemed to Be Too Realistic

Rockstar North co-studio head and development director Rob Nelson explained a feature that was tested during the development of GTA 6 but later removed from the game. According to Nelson, Jason and Lucia would have been able to buy groceries from the market, take them home, and refill the refrigerator. However, the team decided that this system unnecessarily complicated the game’s overall mechanics.

GTA 6 Canceled Grocery Shopping Because It Was Too Complex

According to Nelson’s explanation, the developers at one point worked on a very detailed system where groceries could be purchased in stores and taken home to be placed in the refrigerator. The idea would have strengthened the everyday life and role-playing aspects of GTA 6. However, the system was simplified in later stages, and the grocery shopping and refrigerator refilling mechanic was completely removed.

GTA 6 Removed the Refrigerator System, Which Was Deemed to Be Too Realistic

This system was likely connected to the weight gain and physical transformation mechanics that were mentioned as being included in the game. It’s stated that in GTA 6, values like body composition, health, and stamina will change depending on what characters eat and how much they exercise. Grocery shopping could have made this structure even more detailed, but Rockstar seems to have found the realism too extreme at this point.

Nelson says the team always tries to strike the right balance between realism and playability. The goal isn’t just to add detail to give the player a “role-playing” feeling, but to ensure that every action has a meaningful impact within the game. Therefore, even everyday activities like getting a snack from the refrigerator or going to a restaurant are intended to be used in conjunction with systems, not just decoratively.

The details shown so far in GTA 6 demonstrate Rockstar’s efforts to take the simulation of daily life much further than previous games. However, this example also reveals that the studio hasn’t included every realistic idea in the game. While the system of filling the refrigerator with groceries has been shelved, more basic life mechanics like nutrition, exercise, and physical transformation will remain in the game.
