GTA 6 was Almost Going to Feature Only Four Main Characters
Rockstar Games, which made a significant change to the series with three playable characters in GTA 5, considered increasing this number even further in the sequel. According to studio co-head Rod Nelson, a four-main-character structure was discussed during the development of GTA 6, but the team abandoned this idea due to concerns that players wouldn’t be able to spend enough time with each character and that the emotional connection might weaken.
The Idea of Four Main Characters for GTA 6 Was on the Table
Nelson explains that one of the natural questions after GTA 5 was, “What do we do after three characters?” One of the team’s options was to increase the number of playable characters to four. However, Rockstar thought that as the number of characters increased, the player’s attention would be too divided. Therefore, maintaining the time allocated to each character and the connection established with the player became more important.
This approach also explains why GTA 6 ultimately focuses solely on Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s goal was to make both characters interesting individually, while also ensuring players could connect with them both. According to Nelson, creating the chemistry between the characters wasn’t easy, and significant work went into both the writing and performance aspects to make players believe in the relationship.
The new Extended Look images further clarify Rockstar’s choice. Jason and Lucia aren’t simply portrayed as two characters who commit crimes together; their relationship, tensions, and reactions to each other are highlighted as a significant part of the story. Thus, instead of the three-person structure in GTA 5, the focus shifts to a more intense and personal character relationship.
Rockstar’s abandonment of the four-character idea might seem like a small step compared to GTA 5 at first glance. However, according to the studio’s statements, the decision is driven more by storytelling than scale. The success of GTA 6 is expected to depend as much on the bond between Jason and Lucia as on the size of Vice City or the new systems.
