Mafia 2’s Dark Ending Revealed in Massive Steam Leak
Mafia 2 recently revealed a significant secret through a beta version found among approximately 12 TB of data leaked from Steam. Discovered during the examination of hundreds of old game files, this version contains an alternate ending prepared during the game’s development but not used in the final version. The nearly completed scene was made to work and shown by YouTuber Sliderv2, revealing that Vito and Joe’s story was initially planned to end much more harshly.
In the Mafia 2 Alternate Ending, Vito’s Fate Changes
In the game’s released ending, Vito and Joe are put into different cars. When Vito asks where his friend is being taken, Leo Galante says that Joe is not part of the deal. Thus, it is understood that Vito escapes, while Joe’s fate is left unclear.
The alternate scene in the beta version takes a much darker turn from the same point. After Vito asks the same question about Joe, one of Leo’s men points a gun at Vito. The camera then cuts away while several gunshots are heard in the background.
The scene doesn’t directly show Vito’s death, but the narrative strongly implies it. The previously leaked cut-out script lines suggesting Joe would be sent to Mr. Chu also suggest that the alternate ending prepared a rather brutal fate for both characters.
In the final game, however, the developers chose for Vito to survive, ending the story at a more ambiguous point. The almost complete alternate ending, discovered through a Steam leak, reveals years later just how differently the story could have gone during Mafia 2’s development.
