PlayStation Studios has been Working on a Breaking Bad VR Project
Breaking Bad continues to be remembered in the television world for its impact on various projects. Now, a VR project that was almost ready but never revealed has resurfaced. Details that have emerged show that a very ambitious experience was being worked on for PlayStation at one point.
Why Was the Breaking Bad VR Project Canceled?
The project, which was revealed to be developed by Firesprite, was designed as a story-driven VR experience rather than a classic game. Set in the Breaking Bad universe, it aimed to immerse players directly in the iconic moments of the series. Familiar locations such as Walter White’s house and the New Mexico deserts were specifically planned to be included in the project.
This project isn’t actually entirely new information. In 2017, there were rumors of a VR collaboration between Vince Gilligan and Sony Interactive Entertainment. However, for a long time, it remained unclear which studio was developing the project. Newly revealed information suggests that Firesprite was behind this secret project.
Although development continued between 2017 and 2018, the project was quickly canceled. In later years, Gilligan confirmed the initiative, stating that VR projects present challenges due to high costs and long development times. This is one of the key factors explaining why the project wasn’t completed.
On the other hand, this wasn’t Firesprite’s only canceled project. The studio also worked on a new sci-fi horror IP during the same period, but this project also failed to progress beyond the prototype stage. Despite this, the team continues to work on new projects. Productions like Project Heartbreak, which is rumored to be related to Until Dawn, demonstrate that the studio is still active and productive.
