Rockstar has Made GTA 6 Mods More Difficult Even Before the Game’s Release

Rockstar has made headlines with new modding rules that could affect the long-term PC lifespan of GTA 6. The company’s published community guide covers not only current games but also future titles like GTA 6. While some clauses target cheating and abuse, others are broad enough to directly restrict many projects that mod developers have been working on for years.

Rockstar Sets Strict Limits for GTA 6 Mods

According to the new rules, developers will not be able to reuse content taken from Rockstar games in other productions. Creating additional content on official stories or characters is also prohibited. In addition, projects that allow games to run on hardware not supported by Rockstar, and cheats used in official multiplayer services, will not be allowed.

The rules don’t just cover technical mods. Using protected intellectual property, the voices or appearances of real people, and certain real-world locations in mods could also be problematic. Unauthorized or excessive mod revenue models are also something Rockstar wants. The broad wording makes it unclear where mod developers will be considered to have crossed the line.

While some clauses are understandable due to their anti-cheat approach, the community’s main concern is that a significant portion of the projects that kept GTA 5 and other Rockstar games alive for years could now fall victim to these rules. The company’s past interference with major mod projects also fuels player anxiety.

Ironically, the modding community played a huge role in GTA 5’s longevity. Even roleplay servers like NoPixel initially emerged from the modding culture. Rockstar’s new approach doesn’t completely ban mods in GTA 6, but it significantly restricts developers’ freedom of movement. How strictly these rules will be enforced in practice when the PC version arrives will be the real determining factor.
