Steam Machine Developer Issues Memory Crisis Warning
Yazan Aldehayyat, an engineer working on the Steam Machine project, stated that he does not expect the memory crisis affecting the gaming hardware market to ease in the short term. He noted that the increase in RAM prices is increasing pressure on manufacturers, and that prices seen in stores lag behind the actual situation in the bulk supply market by several months. Therefore, it is thought that further price increases may occur in computer and gaming hardware.
According to a Steam Machine Engineer, the RAM Crisis is Deepening
Yazan Aldehayyat said that the main goal of the Steam Machine is to make it easier to bring the PC gaming experience to the living room. He stated that the device developed by Valve aims to combine the convenience of traditional consoles with the flexibility of PC gaming, and that the project will be considered successful if it meets a real need of users.
However, the device’s price, exceeding $1,000, has sparked debate about the hardware’s accessibility. Aldehayyat argued that the high costs cannot be explained solely by product choices and that memory supply issues directly impact overall hardware prices. According to him, the current pricing pressure is particularly visible in gaming PCs that use large amounts of RAM.
The engineer explicitly stated that the RAM crisis is currently worsening rather than improving. He noted that the prices and stock levels seen on retail shelves reflect the conditions major manufacturers face in the bulk supply market with a delay of approximately three to six months. If this assessment is accurate, the full impact of current supply shortages on consumer prices may not yet be seen.
Aldehayyat believes the problem could be resolved in two different ways over time. Memory prices could fall again, or high costs could become the new normal in the market, altering user expectations. Lenovo executives also recently indicated that the crisis could worsen before stabilizing. According to the Steam Machine engineer, gamers shouldn’t expect cheaper RAM and hardware in the near future.
