A 200GB Rockstar Leak Revealed a GTA 6 Map Being Ported to GTA 5
GTA 5 is being used for a completely different purpose this time, thanks to the examination of some very old GTA 6 files that surfaced in the latest major Rockstar leak. Mod developers managed to run early Vice City and Leonida map data from 2015, reportedly found in an archive of approximately 200 GB, within GTA 5. While the resulting images are quite different from the GTA 6 we see today, they offer an interesting insight into how long Rockstar has been shaping the world of the new game.
GTA 5 Allows Exploring the 2015 GTA 6 Map
According to the modders, the early map data was extracted from the archive and transferred to the GTA 5 engine. This allows exploration of the coastline, city center, highways, areas believed to be a water park, and various points in Vice City. However, it shouldn’t be assumed that this is an exact replica of the final GTA 6 map.
The 2015 prototype looks quite raw. Much of the vegetation is missing, textures are extremely simple, and some areas consist of flat surfaces that almost look like satellite maps. The map also includes text labels marking early concept areas. So what we’re seeing here isn’t a finished world, but a technical sketch from the very early stages of development.
The data allegedly contains various references, such as a settlement around Mount Kalaga, a rocket launch site reminiscent of NASA parodies, and a shipwreck-themed museum. Traces of some map studies inspired by South America, which may have been later cancelled, have also been reported.
It’s important to remember that all these files are approximately 11 years old. This early GTA 6 map, which worked within GTA 5, doesn’t represent the final version, and significant changes are expected over the years. Nevertheless, comparing the initial draft of Vice City with today’s images clearly shows how long GTA 6’s development process has been.
