Wardogs Studios Requires a Passion for FPS Games in New Employees

Wardogs is employing a rather unusual method when selecting its new employees. Bulkhead, the studio behind the game, is reviewing not only applicants’ portfolios and past experience, but also their Steam accounts. The goal is quite clear: to ensure that the person joining the team genuinely plays FPS games and understands the intricacies of the genre. According to the studio management, to create a good FPS game, it’s crucial to work with people who not only develop but also actually play the genre.

Wardogs Team Reviews Applicants’ Steam Playtime

Bulkhead executive Joe Brammer openly states that the studio is comprised of FPS players and that they want to see candidates’ Steam playtime during the hiring process. According to Brammer, having spent significant time playing games like Half-Life, Arma, or Counter-Strike is valuable for Wardogs, as it helps them understand the game’s fundamental mechanics and player expectations.

Wardogs Studios Requires a Passion for FPS Games in New Employees

Kane Allard, the studio’s senior producer, confirms that they look at Steam profiles for almost every application. The goal isn’t to force a specific game or genre; someone who plays Soulslike or RPGs isn’t considered a bad developer. However, Bulkhead specifically wants to see that the candidate has a genuine interest in the FPS genre.

Brammer explains this with a simple example: he says it wouldn’t make sense for him to try making Final Fantasy because he doesn’t know the intricacies of that genre well enough. They apply the same principle to Wardogs. The team member is expected to genuinely care about the small details of the FPS world, from weapon feel and map design to movement systems and competitive gameplay.

Therefore, for Bulkhead, the Steam profile acts almost like a second resume. Wardogs studio wants to work not only with technically strong developers but also with people who genuinely love the genre they’re making. While it might seem unconventional on the hiring side, the studio’s approach is quite clear: if you’re making an FPS, you need to genuinely love playing FPS games.
