Modern Warfare 4 Could Be the Last Game in the Remastered Series

Modern Warfare 4 could be the final installment in the Modern Warfare era, which Infinity Ward rebooted in 2019. Activision’s use of the phrase “epic finale” for the game is being interpreted as meaning the new title will not only complete the current story but could also completely close this Modern Warfare era. The company hasn’t yet announced how the series will continue, but the language used could open the door to a new era for Call of Duty.

Modern Warfare 4 Could Close the Renewed Era of the Series

Activision’s use of the phrase “epic finale” for Modern Warfare 4 might initially only mean the end of the current story. However, Infinity Ward’s almost complete focus on the Modern Warfare brand since 2019 strengthens the idea that this could signal a larger change.

The revamped Modern Warfare series began in 2019, followed by Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3. The completion of this storyline with the fourth game could pave the way for Infinity Ward to move on to a different Call of Duty sub-series after many years. The studio’s last major brands outside of Modern Warfare were Ghosts and Infinite Warfare.

However, Activision has not yet confirmed the complete end of the Modern Warfare brand. The phrase “epic finale” could simply refer to the closure of existing characters or the narrative. Therefore, the possibility of the same name continuing with a different story after Modern Warfare 4 is still on the table.

With Modern Warfare 4’s release just around the corner, the beta process has received criticism for some gameplay choices. Despite this, the potential finale of one of Call of Duty’s best-known sub-brands makes the new game even more significant in terms of story. Activision’s next step will show whether Infinity Ward will actually try a new brand.
