Metro 2039 was Revealed with a New Trailer at Gamescom 2026

Developed by 4A Games, Metro 2039 was shown with new footage during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. This time, the series expands beyond the post-apocalyptic Moscow metro, taking players to both underground tunnels and larger areas on the surface. The new trailer shows that while maintaining the game’s atmosphere, exploration and resource management will take on a more central role than in previous installments.

Metro 2039 Expands the Survival Aspect

The trailer showcases familiar elements of the series such as gas mask use, filter management, limited ammunition, and scavenging resources from the environment. However, Metro 2039 expands these systems to wider areas. Players will have to use their resources carefully not only in combat but also during exploration, and in some areas, it may be more sensible to seek alternative routes instead of direct combat.

The new footage shows encounters with human groups alongside conflicts with mutants. 4A Games is making the relationships between different factions and the player’s approach to these groups a crucial part of the story. Therefore, some missions won’t have a single solution, and decisions made in later chapters may lead to different outcomes.

The weapon system also retains the familiar modification structure from previous games. Players can modify their weapons with found parts, upgrade their equipment, and prepare their own loadouts for different situations. Metro 2039’s more open area design seems to allow for the more comfortable use of different play styles, from sniper rifles to stealthy weapons.

A definitive release date for Metro 2039 has not yet been announced, but it has been stated that the game is being developed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The new presentation at Gamescom 2026 shows that the series is preparing to expand its world without abandoning its dark atmosphere, and that the survival aspect will be more prominent this time.
