Afterworld was Officially Announced at Gamescom 2026

Paradox Interactive officially announced Afterworld during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. The game’s existence had previously been leaked due to a name and brief description accidentally appearing on the company’s own forum, but the new trailer confirms the project for the first time. Afterworld will be a brand new series that takes players approximately a century after the fall of civilization and combines survival with classic grand strategy elements.

Afterworld Combines Survival with Grand Strategy

Players will start the game not with a vast empire, but with a small community of survivors. The first goal will be to keep the people alive before conquering new territories. Exploring dangerous lands, extracting technology from the remnants of the old world, and establishing new settlements will form the basis of progression. However, over time, this small community can grow into a much larger power spreading across the continent.

The world won’t just be filled with other surviving tribes. Players will encounter raiders, cults, warlords, and immortal leaders called Ancients. These characters are described as individuals who lived in the ancient civilization before its collapse and still possess access to lost technologies. Therefore, they will be among the most dangerous opponents in the game, both politically and militarily.

In Afterworld, diplomacy, alliances, and warfare will still be important, but unlike classic Paradox games, famine, dangerous environmental conditions, and resource scarcity will create constant pressure. Players will shape the identity of their tribes, manage different settlements, and decide which ancient technologies will be reused. These choices are expected to affect both the structure of society and how the empire they establish develops.

No official release date has been announced for Afterworld yet. The game can already be added to wishlists on Steam. Paradox’s combination of a post-apocalyptic atmosphere reminiscent of Fallout and Mad Max with its own grand strategy formula makes Afterworld one of the company’s most unique projects in recent years.
