Mewgenics Announced Console Release in 2026 Gamescom
Mewgenics, developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, made a comeback with console versions during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. A listing that appeared on the Xbox Store just days before the event had already suggested the game’s console release was imminent. The Gamescom presentation confirmed the rumors, officially announcing the release dates for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions.
Mewgenics Coming to Consoles on September 8th
The console versions of Mewgenics will be released simultaneously on September 8, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game was previously released on PC via Steam on February 10th. Thus, after a wait of approximately seven months, console players will also be able to experience the turn-based tactical battles, roguelike progression system, and of course, the game’s incredibly bizarre cat armies.
The Gamescom presentation wasn’t just a classic trailer. Before the announcement, a live performance of one of Mewgenics’ songs was brought to the stage, followed by Geoff Keighley’s announcement of the console versions. The Xbox version was largely anticipated, especially after a page appeared on the Xbox Store a few days earlier, but the announcement of the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions releasing on the same day was the key part.
At its core, Mewgenics allows players to build their own armies by breeding cats with different abilities. Genetic traits can be passed down through generations, abilities can be chosen, and items collected in each adventure can change how the team fights. Turn-based combat varies with each attempt due to the roguelike structure, while the cat breeding system ensures the game isn’t just about combat.
The PC version had a remarkable start shortly after its release, reaching over 115,000 concurrent players. The console announcement seems poised to carry this momentum to an even wider audience. While the Xbox Store leak before Gamescom spoiled some of the surprise, it’s now clear when cats will be causing a stir on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo.
