Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Shows Its First Gameplay at Gamescom
Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios released the first comprehensive gameplay demonstration for Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. Announced with a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards 2025, the game is being developed as a third-person single-player action-adventure. The new footage shows how the main character, Kaatri, uses forbidden spells, how she navigates the open world, and the role of her dangerous relationship with Tasha in the story.
Warlock Spells Take War Beyond the Barrier
Players will control Kaatri, a seasoned warrior. To find someone she lost, Kaatri makes a dangerous deal with the infamous witch Tasha, gaining access to supernatural powers in return. The Gamescom demonstration included dialogues between the two, as well as hints at the devastating consequences of this agreement for Kaatri.
The most important aspect of Warlock is that its magic system isn’t solely focused on eliminating enemies. Spells can also be used to forge new paths during exploration, alter environmental obstacles, and access normally inaccessible areas. In combat, melee attacks and spells will intertwine, allowing players to manipulate the environment to their advantage.
The first gameplay footage shows battles with large creatures and different regions of the dark fantasy world. Instead of adapting a ready-made D&D adventure, Invoke Studios is telling an original story set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Kaatri is portrayed by Tricia Helfer, known from Battlestar Galactica and Lucifer, and full-performance capture technology is being used for the character.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is scheduled for release in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The initial gameplay demonstration at Gamescom didn’t reveal a definitive release date, but it clearly showed that Invoke Studios is placing forbidden magic at the heart of both exploration and combat.
