The Canceled Lord of the Rings Game Has Emerged
Eidos-Montréal, which has been in the news in recent years due to restructuring, layoffs, and project cancellations, also shelved an ambitious project set in Middle-earth. According to newly revealed information, the studio was working on a game set in the Lord of the Rings universe with card-based mechanics and a story-driven narrative. Although the development process ended early, the first concept art for the project has surfaced.
What Would the Canceled Lord of the Rings Game Have Offered?
The leaked images show that the game was designed with a top-down perspective. The concept art depicts different regions of Middle-earth from a map-like perspective, suggesting a more tactical and narrative-driven experience rather than a classic action game. The project reportedly aimed to combine Telltale-style storytelling with card-based gameplay.
The frequent mention of Umbar in the file names suggests that one of the game’s main locations will be the pirate port city on the coast of Gondor. This region, known for its pirates in the books, is reflected in the concept art with ships, arid landscapes, and harbor structures. Furthermore, an image said to be of The Prancing Pony inn reveals that the story will also touch upon familiar locations in Middle-earth.
A short video shared shows Umbar Bay in two different time periods: the city’s thriving state and its post-destruction state. This suggests the game may have a narrative structure that deals with the events before and after major conflicts in the Tolkien universe. This approach, focusing on the city’s fall, indicates a significant dramatic weight in the story.
The final images feature scenes from early gameplay testing. Unfinished 3D environments show basic mechanics like ladder climbing being tested, while enemy figures marked with red silhouettes and labeled “Corsair” reveal that Umbar pirates will play a significant role in the game.
How card-based systems would be integrated into this gameplay structure remains a big question mark. Although the project was cancelled, these leaked materials clearly show that Eidos-Montréal was preparing to try something unconventional for the Lord of the Rings universe.
