The Defiant Showed Its New Trailer at Gamescom 2026
Developed by Hoothanes and published by 4Divinity, The Defiant was shown with new footage during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. A story-driven first-person shooter, the game focuses on the conflicts around the Great Wall of China in 1942. While most World War II games focus on familiar fronts like Normandy, Stalingrad, or the Pacific, The Defiant takes a different approach, centering on China’s resistance against the Japanese invasion.
The Defiant Brings the Chinese Front to the Heart of the War
The Gamescom trailer shows intense fighting as Chinese soldiers defend a crumbling lookout post. Bullets hit walls, positions fall one by one, and the conflict escalates from rifles to bayonets and close combat. The trailer’s tone is also quite harsh; it’s less about heroism and more about ordinary soldiers desperately trying to survive.
The game’s campaign won’t be limited to a single conflict. The development team plans to take players to different periods of the war between 1937 and 1945. As they progress through different regions, seasons, and years, they will encounter different facets of Chinese resistance. This places The Defiant in a slightly broader space than the classic “a few big battles and a finale” structure.
The good news is that players attending Gamescom won’t just be watching the game. A playable demo of The Defiant, approximately 15 minutes long, will be shown to Western players for the first time at the event. The demo was previously shown at ChinaJoy 2026; Gamescom will be the game’s first serious test in Europe.
The Defiant is planned for development on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but a definitive release date has not yet been announced. For now, its most striking aspect is that instead of repeatedly telling the story of World War II from the same fronts, it goes to a less explored period and geography. This alone is enough to set the game apart from similar games.
