Showa American Story Games Showed Its New Trailer at Gamescom 2026
Showa American Story, developed by NEKCOM Entertainment, made its debut at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 with a new in-game trailer. The long-awaited action RPG is set in an alternate 1980s world where Japanese culture has spread across America. Players control Chigusa Choko, a young woman who has returned from the dead, embarking on a long journey across North America filled with zombies, mutants, and bizarre characters.
Showa American Story Reimagines Post-Apocalyptic America
In the game’s world, Japan has a significant economic and cultural influence on America. As the two cultures blend over time, a mysterious catastrophe disrupts everything, transforming the country into a post-apocalyptic place overrun by zombies and other creatures. Choko tries to understand why she returned to life and what exactly happened to the world.
The new Gamescom trailer also showcases one of the game’s strongest aspects: its tone. Showa American Story tells a serious apocalyptic story, blending it with rather bizarre scenes reminiscent of B-movies, 80s music, and the exaggerated pop culture of the era. The characters encountered throughout the story are said to be an important part of both comedic and dramatic moments.
In terms of gameplay, melee weapons, firearms, and various abilities can be used together. Choko’s journey won’t be limited to combat; exploring vast areas, talking to characters, and gaining strength along the way will also be important parts of the experience. Gamescom 2026 visitors can also try out the game’s new playable demo at the event.
Showa American Story is planned for release on PC and PlayStation 5 in 2026, but a definitive date has not yet been announced. Previously targeted for 2025, the game was delayed to 2026 due to the extended development process. The new presentation at Gamescom clearly shows that the project is still actively being developed and that NEKCOM hasn’t abandoned its rather unconventional American interpretation.
