According to Iman Vellani, Generation Z Loves Superheroes
Iman Vellani has stated that she disagrees with comments suggesting that Generation Z is no longer interested in superhero movies. According to the actress, who played Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels, young audiences haven’t distanced themselves from the genre. The problem is that viewers, having encountered similar productions for many years, no longer see going to the cinema as a necessity and expect more original narratives.
Iman Vellani Says Generation Z’s Expectations Have Changed
Iman Vellani stated that her generation grew up with numerous superhero stories, and therefore it’s natural for the genre to lose its initial sense of novelty. According to the actress, this is less about a lack of interest and more about rising expectations. Young viewers are no longer satisfied with just seeing well-known characters on screen; they are looking for more personal, emotional stories with a specific purpose.
Vellani stated that audiences expect honesty from storytellers, especially in an era where artificial intelligence is increasingly used in creative industries. Emphasizing that young audiences want their intelligence respected, the actress believes superheroes should be treated as human beings first. According to her, powers and costumes shouldn’t overshadow the characters’ emotional journeys.
Noting that themes like grief, identity, belonging, and legacy can resonate with audiences in any era, Iman Vellani reminded viewers that the superhero genre, like other film genres, experiences its ups and downs. She said that Westerns, musicals, and romantic comedies go through similar cycles, arguing that the solution isn’t to abandon the genre, but to find new stories that can be told through the superhero narrative.
Vellani also stated that audiences embrace characters for their human qualities, not their special powers. She said that the addition of Kamala Khan’s mutant identity to the MCU initially worried her, but that the character’s core characteristics were preserved. While Marvel’s future is still uncertain, Iman Vellani believes that Generation Z will continue to be interested in well-written superhero stories that evolve with them.
