Battlestate Games’ Legal Move Finished SP Tarkov Off

SP Tarkov has been one of the most beloved community projects for those who wanted to experience Escape from Tarkov offline and in single-player mode for years. However, a legal notice sent by Battlestate Games has brought an end to the project in its current form, after more than six years. Nevertheless, contrary to initial statements, the project will not completely disappear; the source code and existing installations will continue to exist.

Is SP Tarkov Really Shutting Down Completely?

Battlestate Games’ legal team objected to the use of the “Tarkov” brand in the project’s domain name and website. The notice requested a change of the domain name, the removal of brand-related expressions, and a departure from names that evoke Escape from Tarkov. Following this, the current development team announced that they would terminate the project’s distribution infrastructure by August 12th.

The SPT Forge website, patch distribution system, and existing domain name will be shut down. The GitHub organization will also be renamed and archived, but the source code will not be deleted. Thanks to the open-source nature, developers who wish to can fork the code and try to continue the project under a different name. The current team will no longer be responsible for development and distribution.

A later announcement revealed that the situation was less murky than initially appeared. The Discord server is not planned to be shut down, and SPT 4.1, released on August 1st, was already considered the last version for the current team. Users who have backed up the game files will be able to continue with manual installations. It was also stated that Forge does not directly host mods, but only links to files in different repositories.

Some in the community see shutting down the entire infrastructure as an unnecessarily harsh decision when only a name change was requested. Others point out that the project, based on the core files of Escape from Tarkov, has already been in a legally grey area for a long time. In short, SP Tarkov will not completely disappear, but it has reached the end of the road with the team and distribution system as we know it. What happens next depends on new developers willing to take over the project.
