Elder Scrolls 6 may struggle in RPG competition
The Elder Scrolls 6, after years of silence, remains one of the biggest expectations in the RPG world, but the genre’s current state makes the game’s task much more challenging than before. The Bethesda formula that once set the standards is no longer considered sufficient to create the same impact today, and players now expect not just large maps or a sense of freedom, but much deeper, living, and powerful worlds.
The Bar is Now Much Higher in the RPG Genre
The major RPGs released in the last decade have seriously pushed the boundaries of the genre. Storytelling, character depth, animation quality, and the vibrancy of worlds have become indispensable for players. This means that a “like-new” approach won’t be enough for Bethesda in the new game. Technical flaws and superficial storytelling that were acceptable during the Skyrim era may not be tolerated today.
Bethesda’s past games stood out for their sense of exploration and freedom, but these strengths alone are no longer enough. Players want worlds where NPCs feel truly alive, and reactions are natural, not mechanical. Dull stares, limited animations, and weak emotional expression risk leaving The Elder Scrolls 6 behind in the face of modern RPGs.
Furthermore, players value “living” in the world rather than just running from quest to quest. Side activities, small but meaningful pursuits, and systems that allow for character connection are now a vital part of the RPG experience. With competing titles raising the bar in these areas, it has become imperative for The Elder Scrolls 6 to meet these expectations.
It’s undeniable that Bethesda still has a very strong asset. The series’ rich universe, deep lore, and exploration-based gameplay offer great potential. However, to realize this potential, a significant overhaul is needed in terms of storytelling, character writing, and technical presentation. Otherwise, The Elder Scrolls 6 might be remembered as a game that struggled in the RPG competition, overshadowed by its own legacy.
