Gamers Don’t Want to Pay Full Price for Games

Game prices have risen dramatically in recent years. While $70 is now almost standard for big-budget titles, some new games are even reaching the $80 mark. However, as the industry pushes prices up, it seems players aren’t accepting them at the same pace. According to new research, most players no longer buy games at launch price.

Players Prefer Waiting for Discounts

According to a large-scale study, 62% of participants say they no longer pay full price for video games. The research was conducted with the participation of thousands of players from different countries such as the US, UK, and Australia. This rate shows that the high launch prices of newly released games are becoming an increasing deterrent for more and more players.

An interesting picture emerges when looking at age groups. 42% of Gen Z players still seem more willing to pay full price for games. This figure drops to 38% among Millennials. In the Gen X group, only 20% are willing to pay full price for new games. This means that as players get older, they are more likely to opt for discounts, subscriptions, or more affordable alternatives.

This shift isn’t solely driven by $70 AAA games. Players can now easily access lower-priced but high-quality titles. Games like Hollow Knight: Silksong ($20) or Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ($50) offer serious alternatives to high-priced big-name titles. Free-to-play games like Fortnite and Apex Legends are another factor changing players’ spending habits.

The possibility of some games like Mario Kart World reaching $80 and similar price rumors for GTA 6 could further fuel this debate. Of course, some major brands may continue to sell regardless of the price. However, the overall picture shows that gamers are now more selective. Many prefer to wait for discounts, use subscription services, or opt for higher-quality games at more affordable prices, rather than buying new games immediately.
