Steam Malware Allegations Under FBI Investigation
Steam, one of the world’s largest PC gaming platforms, is once again in the spotlight due to cybersecurity allegations. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced it is conducting an investigation into suspicions that some games published on the platform may contain malware. It is believed that some titles released in the last two years may have been used to infect players’ computers with malicious software.
Steam Games Under Investigation for Malware
According to information shared by the FBI, it is estimated that the games under investigation were developed by the same person or group. Although these games were published normally on the Steam store, it is considered that they may contain malware in the background. It is stated that these titles, which appear to be simple but functional games, may actually have been designed to install malware on users’ computers.
Among the games highlighted by authorities are BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse or DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova. The FBI has asked users who may have downloaded these games to contact the agency. Players who have installed these titles are particularly advised to check their computers with security software.
These types of attacks are usually carried out using Trojans. Users think they are downloading and running a game, but in the background, malicious software can be installed on their systems. This software can then lead to the theft of personal data, remote access to systems, or other harmful activities.
Similar incidents have occurred on Steam in the past. Last year, it was revealed that some developers had uploaded games containing malware to the platform, and Valve removed these titles from the store. However, the exact number of players affected was not clearly stated. While the FBI investigation continues, neither Valve nor the authorities have issued a more comprehensive statement on the matter.
