Tom Holland Wants to Take a Different Approach in Spider-Man 5

While no official development details have been shared for Spider-Man 5, Tom Holland has revealed his vision for the future of the series. Influenced by Christopher Nolan’s hands-on, effects-based approach during the filming of The Odyssey, the actor wants future Spider-Man films to rely less on computer effects and incorporate more physically executed scenes.

Spider-Man 5 Could Use More Hand-On Effects

Tom Holland stated that Christopher Nolan’s approach of shooting as many scenes directly in front of the camera as possible increased creativity on set. According to the actor, some scenes that seem large can be shot with simpler methods than expected, with proper planning and preparation. Holland noted that he saw techniques he had never encountered before during The Odyssey, and this approach changed his perspective on future projects.

Marvel films have long relied heavily on visual effects to create the movements, costumes, and major conflicts of superheroes. Holland, however, wants Spider-Man 5 to utilize real sets, physical props, and directly performed acrobatic scenes to make it easier for audiences to believe what they’re seeing. The actor’s goal isn’t to eliminate visual effects entirely, but to create a more balanced structure with real footage.

The first steps of this change have already been taken during the filming of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Holland confirmed that a real costume is being used in the new film and that some stunt scenes are being performed physically. Footage from Glasgow shows a stuntman actually swinging above the streets with the help of a moving apparatus. However, according to the actor, this approach hasn’t yet been implemented on the scale Nolan used in The Odyssey.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to be the beginning of a new trilogy for Tom Holland’s character. Therefore, the actor’s increasing creative influence could also shape the technical aspects of the next film. If Spider-Man 5 uses more practical effects, it could gain a different visual identity from previous installments in the series. Sony and Marvel have yet to make any official announcements regarding the director, shooting schedule, or production methods for the new film.
