Total War: Warhammer 40K Will Break the Mold
When Creative Assembly announced during The Game Awards that they would be bringing the Total War series to the Warhammer 40K universe for the first time, expectations were high, but the first details shared are exceeding those expectations. Galactic maps encompassing multiple planets, asymmetrical races, and mechanics that challenge the classic Total War formula point to one of the most radical steps the series has taken to date.
Aeldari Gameplay Changes Total War Habits
Among the four main races introduced, the Aeldari offer by far the most unique experience in terms of gameplay philosophy. The development team emphasizes that instead of fighting large armies on the battlefield, the Aeldari will rely on stealth, psychic powers, and Webway portals. In this race, each unit is extremely valuable, and losses are irreplaceable, forcing the player to act more carefully and strategically.
The Aeldari’s goal, unlike other races, will be to prevent galactic catastrophes and achieve specific hidden objectives, rather than conquering the map. The use of Craftworlds to produce units off-map completely eliminates the classic city-building and economic logic. This approach drastically breaks the familiar “conquer, grow, crush” cycle of Total War gameplay.
Other races are more familiar, but still feature Warhammer 40K-specific touches. Space Marines consist of a small but extremely powerful elite unit, but will be limited in infrastructure development. Astra Militarum, with their numerically superior army and industrial power, offers gameplay closest to the series.
Orcs, on the other hand, promise an experience built entirely on chaos and momentum. Massive units, an aggressive playstyle, and a “Waaagh” mechanic will constantly seek combat. Creative Assembly has confirmed that Chaos Space Marines and other iconic 40K races will be added in the future, while also emphasizing that Total War: Warhammer 40K will be a long-running series.
