Valor Mortis Combat System Appears More Brutal Than Expected
Valor Mortis stands out as the new project from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner, venturing into a completely different genre. This first-person Soulslike game combines fast-paced movement with intense combat and supernatural powers. The newly released combat visuals suggest the game will stand out not only for its atmosphere but also for its constantly demanding battles.
What Will Valor Mortis’ Combat System Offer?
In the game, we control William, a former soldier who fought in Napoleon’s Grande Armée. However, William’s story doesn’t end with his death on the battlefield. Mysteriously resurrected, the character begins to carry the power of a terrible plague sweeping across Europe within his own body. This grants him supernatural abilities and signals that the creatures he encounters will be quite different from ordinary enemies.
The combat system doesn’t seem to be based solely on waiting for an enemy attack and reacting at the right moment. One More Level utilizes the fast-paced movement experience from Ghostrunner. Players will need to position themselves around enemies using new movement abilities and stay as far away from attacks as possible. Napoleon’s Eternal Guard troops have transformed into terrifying creatures due to the plague.
Exploration will be as important as combat. As you progress through an alternate 19th-century Europe, you’ll explore war-torn regions, uncover hidden secrets, and make discoveries that can increase your chances of survival. The intertwining of historical characters with supernatural events quickly moves Valor Mortis away from a classic Napoleonic story.
Valor Mortis will be released on October 13, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. What’s been shown so far suggests that One More Level attempts to combine the Soulslike formula with its own fast-paced, action-packed gameplay. The first-person camera, in particular, could make close combat with terrifying creatures much more unsettling. If Valor Mortis strikes this balance, it could be one of the most unique Soulslike games of the year.
