Why Are There No Humans in Predator: Badlands?

The new Predator: Badlands film represents a radical shift in direction for the series. This time, there are no human characters, and the story is told entirely through the eyes of a Yautja. Director Dan Trachtenberg explains that the reason behind this choice was to both challenge audience expectations and expand the universe.

The Reason Predator: Badlands Isn’t Human Explained

In an interview with ScreenRant, Dan Trachtenberg stated that the lack of humans in the film was a deliberate choice. The director explained, “The audience’s attention always shifts to the humans. This turns the story into a cliché of ‘human-Predator cooperation,'” stating that he wanted to break the franchise’s traditional narrative. In his opinion, the focus should have been entirely on the Yautja character, Dek.

Trachtenberg stated that he initially planned the story as a film set during World War II, but decided a Yautja-centric setting would be far more compelling. This led to a concept in which Dek teams up with a Weyland-Yutani-designed synthetic robot, Thia, played by Elle Fanning, instead of a human.

The director stated that this idea injected fresh energy into the series. “There was always this question: ‘Why does the Predator lose in every movie?’ I said, ‘Let the Predator win this time, but not as a villain; let the Predator win in his own world, with his own code of honor.’ The film focuses on a young Yautja warrior’s struggle to prove himself within his clan.

Despite the lack of human characters, the film carries emotional depth. The audience explores the concepts of honor, belonging, and power through the eyes of a Predator. Furthermore, the presence of Weyland-Yutani provides a subtle nod to the Alien universe. This third success in the series, following “Prey” and “Killer of Killers,” proves that Trachtenberg’s approach has received full marks from audiences.
