Don’t Worry, World of Warcraft: Midnight is Still Safe

With the increasing use of generative AI in the gaming industry recently, many players are worried that their favorite series will also be swept up in this wave. Especially in voice acting, visual design, and music, reactions to the use of generative AI are growing, naturally turning attention to Blizzard’s major projects. World of Warcraft: Midnight has been at the center of these discussions.

No Generative AI in World of Warcraft: Midnight

Statements from Blizzard indicate that, at least for now, generative AI is not involved in the development process of World of Warcraft: Midnight. Overwatch game director Aaron Keller recently stated that they are not comfortable putting “AI-generated content” in front of players. Previously, former WoW franchise director John Hight also explicitly stated that generative AI is not used in MMOs.

Don't Worry, World of Warcraft: Midnight is Still Safe

Speaking to Game Informer, Leo Kaliski, the lead composer of WoW: Midnight, clearly stated that generative AI was not used in the music production. Kaliski said that the team was “lucky and happy,” producing the music entirely through their own creative process. This statement is an important message, especially for the WoW community, which is sensitive about soundtracks.

On the other hand, the fact that Blizzard president Johanna Faries previously stated that there was a central management team within the company focused on AI doesn’t mean the matter is completely closed. However, looking at the current situation, the World of Warcraft: Midnight team seems determined to continue the creative process with human hands.

Of course, industry dynamics are rapidly changing, and the future is not entirely guaranteed, especially considering Microsoft’s AI investments. Nevertheless, for now, World of Warcraft: Midnight manages to stay away from the general AI debates. This shows that a production process faithful to the roots of the series is being maintained.
