Monster Wolf Begins Mission Against Bears in Japan
The increase in bear attacks in Japan has led the country to a rather unusual solution. Animatronic robot wolves called Monster Wolf are being used more frequently to keep bears away from residential areas. Originally developed to protect farmland from deer and wild boars, these devices are now being used against bears seen near homes, schools, and shops.
Monster Wolf Used to Scare Away Bears
Monster Wolf is described as a motion-sensitive robot scarecrow costing approximately $4,000. With its red eyes, exposed teeth, artificial fur, and blue-red LED lights, it has a rather frightening appearance. The robot creates a predatory animal sensation by turning its head from side to side and can play approximately 50 different sound recordings. Some of these sounds are electronic, while others are human voices.
In Japan, the need for such solutions has increased significantly recently. Fatal bear attacks in the 2025-2026 period are more than double the previous record. The number of bear sightings, particularly in northern regions, has increased dramatically as animals emerging from hibernation approach residential areas. The sightings of bears near homes, shops, and schools naturally create security concerns among the local population.
Ohta Seiki, the Japanese company that produces robotic wolves, is struggling to keep up with demand. Company president Yuji Ohta says that Monster Wolves are hand-built and they are currently unable to respond to orders quickly enough. Customers may have to wait two to three months for delivery. This shows that the product has evolved from a niche agricultural tool to a broader security solution.
The company’s future plans are also quite remarkable. Ohta Seiki wants to add wheels to Monster Wolf models in the future so they can patrol specific areas. They are also considering using AI-powered cameras in future versions. These robot wolves, which sound a bit like game enemies, seem to have become an unexpected real-world “boss defense” in Japan.
