US Posts About Mario and Pokémon have Worried Japan
The use of Mario and other Japanese-made characters in political messages and military content has unexpectedly escalated into a copyright dispute between Japan and the United States. Japanese officials have reportedly warned Washington multiple times in recent months, particularly stating that the unauthorized use of copyrighted characters by public institutions could harm these brands.
Why Were Warnings Issued Regarding Mario and Other Japanese Brands?
It is reported that the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested the US administration not to use intellectual property such as Naruto, Pokémon, and Mario in social media content without permission. These warnings were not only issued once; similar requests were reportedly made at least twice more in June through the US Embassy in Japan.
The main reason the controversy escalated is that these characters were used not only in humorous posts but also in conjunction with political and military messages. The White House’s social media account had previously shared content combining Wii Sports footage with videos of military operations. Other brands such as Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dragon Ball, and Halo have also been featured in similar posts.
The Pokémon Company had previously stated that they had not been granted permission for a government video using their characters. Japanese authorities have also explicitly stated that it is inappropriate for public institutions to use copyrighted works without the consent of the copyright holders. The issue gained further visibility with the “Protect Japanese Manga” campaign launched by fans in Japan.
In June, Donald Trump’s sharing of an AI-generated video depicting himself as Naruto reignited the debate. The Japanese side once again emphasized that obtaining permission from the copyright holder should be a fundamental principle. The concern that associating Mario and similar characters with political content could damage brand image is currently at the heart of the matter.
